Imperial palaces, classical music and coffee house culture on the Danube.
Vienna was the capital of the Habsburg empire for centuries, and its grand buildings show it. Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the emperors, has more than 1,400 rooms and formal gardens, and the Hofburg in the centre was their winter home.
Music runs through the city's history: Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss all lived here, and you can see opera at the State Opera or a concert at the Musikverein. The Belvedere palace holds Gustav Klimt's The Kiss.
Take time for coffee and cake in a traditional coffee house, a custom recognised as part of Austria's intangible cultural heritage, and in Advent the squares fill with Christmas markets.
