The Acropolis, lively neighbourhoods and the gateway to the Greek islands.
Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the Parthenon still stands on the Acropolis above the modern city. Below it, the Acropolis Museum displays sculptures from the temple in bright glass galleries, with views up to the hill.
The old streets of Plaka and Monastiraki are full of tavernas and small shops, and the Ancient Agora, where Socrates debated, is close by. For sunset, head to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, about an hour and a half down the coast.
Athens is also the main gateway to the islands: ferries leave the port of Piraeus for the Cyclades and the Saronic islands.
