The Azores are nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic, around 1,400 kilometres west of Lisbon. Most visitors start on São Miguel, the largest island, where flights land at Ponta Delgada.

The island is known for its crater lakes, such as Sete Cidades, with its blue and green lakes side by side, and Lagoa do Fogo. At Furnas, hot springs bubble up in the village, and the local stew, cozido, is cooked underground in volcanic heat.

The waters around the islands are known for whale and dolphin watching, and you can visit the tea plantation at Gorreana, which has been growing tea since 1883.
