Alicante is the main gateway to the Costa Blanca, and the city itself makes a relaxed base. Santa Bárbara Castle sits on Mount Benacantil above Postiguet beach, and you can reach it by a lift cut into the rock.
The palm lined Explanada de España, paved with millions of wavy marble tiles, runs along the marina, and boats sail from the harbour to the small island of Tabarca, a marine reserve.
Resorts along the coast include Benidorm, Altea, Calpe and Jávea, and the mountain village of Guadalest makes a good day out.
