Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, off the coast of north west Africa, and its mild climate makes it a favourite for winter sun. The south, around Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, is the main resort area, with sheltered beaches and plenty for families.

At the centre of the island, Mount Teide rises to 3,715 metres, the highest point in Spain. A cable car takes you close to the summit through the lunar landscape of Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The north is greener, with the historic town of La Laguna, and from the cliffs of Los Gigantes in the west, boat trips go out to see whales and dolphins.
