A city on fourteen islands, with a medieval old town and an archipelago to explore.
Stockholm is built on fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, so water is never far away. Gamla Stan, the old town, has cobbled lanes, the Royal Palace and the Nobel Prize Museum.
On the island of Djurgården you can see the Vasa, a warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised almost intact in 1961, as well as the Skansen open air museum and ABBA The Museum.
In summer, ferries take you out into the archipelago, which has around 30,000 islands, for swimming, walking and seafood.
