Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, and its history shows in every town: Greek temples, Arab domes, Norman cathedrals and baroque squares. Catania, on the east coast, sits beneath Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, and tours run up its slopes all year.

Nearby, the hilltop town of Taormina has an ancient theatre with views of Etna and the sea. Further south lie the baroque towns of the Val di Noto and the island of Ortigia in Syracuse.

Palermo, the capital, is known for its markets and street food, and the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento has some of the best preserved Greek temples outside Greece.
