Ancient ruins, Renaissance art and long lunches in Italy's capital.
Rome has been lived in for nearly 3,000 years, and you feel it everywhere. The Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill share one ticket, and the Pantheon, nearly 2,000 years old, still has its original concrete dome.
Vatican City, the world's smallest country, holds St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, where Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel is the highlight. Book tickets ahead for both the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums.
Between sights, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, wander the cobbled lanes of Trastevere and stop for gelato.
Entry rules depend on your passport and the purpose of your trip, and they can change, so check the official sources below before you book. Italy uses the EU's Entry/Exit System for short stay visitors who are not EU nationals. The EU's official Travel to Europe site explains it, along with the ETIAS travel authorisation.
Read TravelHealthPro's Italy page and book a travel health appointment well before your trip if you have any health questions. Summers are hot, so drink plenty of water, use sun protection and plan breaks out of the midday sun. Travel insurance that covers medical care is sensible.
The currency is the euro (EUR). Carry some cash for small purchases and markets, tell your bank before you travel, and check what your card charges for payments abroad.

Yes. St Peter's Basilica asks every visitor to cover their shoulders, and men to wear long trousers and women skirts below the knee or trousers. Pack a light layer to cover up if you visit on a hot day.

Trains link Fiumicino Airport (FCO) with the city: an express train runs without stopping to Termini station in the centre, and a regional line serves other stations. The airport is about 30 km from Rome.
