Rhodes Old Town was built by the Knights of St John and is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. Its walls, gates and the Palace of the Grand Master are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About an hour south, the white village of Lindos sits beneath an ancient acropolis on a cliff above the sea. The east coast has long sandy beaches and resorts such as Faliraki and Kolymbia, and Anthony Quinn Bay is popular for snorkelling.

Inland, the Valley of the Butterflies fills with tiger moths in summer, and the holiday season runs from April to October.
