Naples is a loud, lively port city on a bay overlooked by Mount Vesuvius, and it is where pizza as we know it was born. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the National Archaeological Museum holds many of the finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried by Vesuvius in AD 79, are a short train ride away, and you can walk up to the crater of Vesuvius itself.

South of the city, the Sorrento peninsula leads to the Amalfi Coast and the cliffside towns of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Ferries run to the islands of Capri and Ischia.
