A sunny island nation of honey coloured cities, clear seas and ancient temples.
Malta packs thousands of years of history into a small island south of Sicily. Valletta, the capital, was built by the Knights of St John in the 1500s and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; St John's church there holds Caravaggio's Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, his largest painting.
Inland, the walled city of Mdina sits on a hilltop, and the megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra are older than the Pyramids of Giza. Boat trips from the south coast visit the Blue Grotto.
Ferries cross to the greener island of Gozo, and to Comino for the Blue Lagoon. English is an official language, which makes getting around easy.
