Hills, trams and tiled facades in Portugal's sunny capital on the Tagus.
Lisbon spreads across seven hills above the wide Tagus estuary. Old yellow trams climb through the Alfama, the oldest district, past tiled houses and viewpoints over the river, while the Baixa below was rebuilt on a grid after the earthquake of 1755.
In Belém, west of the centre, the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower recall the age of the Portuguese voyages of discovery, and the bakery nearby has sold its custard tarts, pastéis de Belém, since 1837.
Trains run from the city to the palaces of Sintra and the seaside town of Cascais, each well under an hour away.
Entry rules depend on your passport and the purpose of your trip, and they can change, so check the official sources below before you book. Portugal uses the EU's Entry/Exit System for short stay visitors who are not EU nationals. The EU's official Travel to Europe site explains it, along with the ETIAS travel authorisation.
Read TravelHealthPro's Portugal page and book a travel health appointment well before your trip if you have any health questions. Summers are sunny and warm, so drink plenty of water and use sun protection. The city is hilly, so comfortable shoes help. Travel insurance that covers medical care is sensible.
The currency is the euro (EUR). Carry some cash for small purchases and markets, tell your bank before you travel, and check what your card charges for payments abroad.

Fado is a Portuguese music genre that can be traced to Lisbon in the early 19th century. It was added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage lists in 2011.
Lisbon has a Metro, which also reaches the airport, and a tram network. Some steep parts of the city can only be crossed by small trams, so expect hills and wear comfortable shoes.
Take the Metro: Lisbon Airport (LIS), officially Humberto Delgado Airport, has a Metro station at the edge of the Terminal 1 arrivals area. The airport is about 7 km northeast of the historic centre.
