Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, stretching from the plains near Verona in the south to the mountains of Trentino in the north. Its shores are dotted with towns such as Sirmione, with its moated castle and Roman villa ruins, Malcesine, and Limone, known for its old lemon houses.

From Malcesine, a rotating cable car climbs Monte Baldo for wide views over the water, and ferries link the towns around the lake. Families can spend a day at Gardaland, near Peschiera.

The nearest airport is Verona, a city worth a visit for its Roman arena, where opera is staged in summer.
