Canal side Nyhavn, Tivoli Gardens and a city made for cycling.
Copenhagen is a compact, easy going city where cycling is the everyday way to get around. Nyhavn, the old harbour lined with brightly painted townhouses, is the classic view, and canal tours leave from here.
Tivoli Gardens, which opened in 1843, is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, with rides, gardens and concerts in the heart of the city. Nearby are the royal palaces of Amalienborg and Rosenborg, and the Little Mermaid statue sits on the waterfront.
The city is known for its food scene and Danish design, and day trips run to Kronborg Castle at Helsingør, the setting of Hamlet.
