Tangier looks across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain and has long drawn writers and artists. The Kasbah crowns the old medina, with its museum in the former sultan's palace, and the cafés of the Petit Socco are good for watching the world go by.
Outside town, Cap Spartel marks the meeting of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and the Caves of Hercules open onto the sea. The blue town of Chefchaouen is a popular day trip.
Spring and early autumn are pleasant, and summer is warm rather than hot.
