Mombasa is Kenya's main port, an island city with a Swahili old town and Fort Jesus, a sixteenth century Portuguese fort that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
South of the city, Diani Beach has miles of white sand, palm trees and coral reefs, with dhow trips, snorkelling and diving. To the north are Nyali, Bamburi and the ruins of Gede near Watamu.
You can add a beach stay to a safari, with Tsavo National Parks a few hours away. There are no direct flights from the UK; most travellers connect in Nairobi.
