Red city of souks, riads and gardens at the foot of the Atlas Mountains.
Marrakech is a short flight from the UK and feels a world away. Jemaa el Fnaa, the great square of the medina, fills each evening with food stalls, musicians and storytellers, and the souks around it sell leather, lamps, spices and rugs.
The Koutoubia minaret is the city's landmark, and the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Majorelle Garden show off its craftsmanship. Most visitors stay in a riad, a traditional house built around a courtyard, or in a resort hotel among the palm groves.
The High Atlas is about an hour away for mountain walks. Spring and autumn are ideal; winter days are sunny but nights are cool.

Read TravelHealthPro's Morocco page and book a travel health appointment well before your trip. Summers are very hot, so drink plenty of water, use sun protection and rest in the shade in the afternoon. Take care with food and water hygiene.
The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Carry some cash for the souks and small purchases, tell your bank before you travel and check its fees for card payments and cash withdrawals abroad.
