Siem Reap is the base for visiting Angkor, the capital of the Khmer empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, and the faces of the Bayon and the tree roots of Ta Prohm are just as memorable.
Plan two or three days for the temples, with sunrise at Angkor Wat. In town, the Old Market and Pub Street are busy in the evenings, and the floating villages of the Tonle Sap lake are nearby. A new international airport opened in 2023.
